Agha Ali and Kubra Khan make Andaz e Sitam an interesting watch
The way Agha Ali has portrayed Wamiq actually makes you want to hate him and feel sorry for Ayat.
Sadly, the topic of rape is becoming quite a norm in our plays these days. Starting from Ghayal to BayKhudi it shows that if you can’t have the person whom you love the simple solution is to kidnap them then rape her and either scar her for life or marry her because no one knew it was you who committed the hideous crime. In the midst of all this enters Andaz-e-Sitam which is another Big Bang Production but this time for Urdu1 where once again we see Kubra Khan play the role of a victim named Ayat.
But the beauty of Ayat is that she has not taken being raped or kidnapped by Wamiq (Aagha Ali) lightly. She goes to Wamiq's house to tell his mother, Mrs Nawazish ( Irsa Ghazal) , exactly what her beloved son did.
But before we get into this week’s 6th episode review, let's recap a bit.
Ayat having come back home from abroad is a fun-loving girl who has a younger brother called Samar (Ali Ansari). Upon her return, he gets into a fight with Wamiq who is the bad boy of the college and since his mother is a very famous NGO head who fights for women’s right as well as a trustee of the college he thinks this is his domain and treats others like trash.
When Ayat finds out how Samar was treated by Wamiq she goes to the Principal to complain but since Wamiq is a big shot's son all Ayat faces is disappointment. Upon meeting, him again, Ayat slaps Wamiq in front of everyone in the college much to his dismay.Because he was humiliated in front of everyone, he feels he has to take revenge and guess what comes to his mind? Yes, you guessed it, to Kidnap and rape her! But the twist which Enam Hassan has penned is that Wamiq also marries her but in the morning, he burns the Nikah papers so she has no proof that both got married!
Now let us tell you Wamiq is one twisted personality mainly because his mother never had the time for him and has spoilt him so badly that he is not even willing to listen to her on anything in fact he behaves quite badly with her. We don’t really blame him because Mrs Nawazish is not exactly your “ I love my kids” type of a mum nor is she as pious as she comes across in front of people as we saw this week when Ayat went to meet her.
Because Mrs Nawazish fights for women’s rights, Ayat thought that she would be able to help her with Wamiq but as we said before she is one corrupt lady herself, she just brushes Ayat aside and doesn’t believe anything which she says leaving Ayat and us greatly disappointed. Even though Ayat has the full support of her family who are just glad to see her back and don’t wish to get involved with Wamiq , Ayat it seems will teach the bad boy a lesson or two. How far will she succeed is what he hope to see next week.
In the first episode we were really impressed by Faris Shafi but this week we saw very little of him but the duo who have gotten in the skin of their characters are Kubra Khan and Agha Ali. Both acted well especially Agha as he's nailed that bad boy image and personality quite well making us hate Wamiq and that is where the actor has succeeded in achieving his target. Irsa Ghazal is a superb actress but here her character with loud expressions and voice becomes a bit too much to bear at times.
Direction by Ali Hassan continues to be smooth, we also like Ayat's father's personality as he thinks things through logically. How he supported her in front of the police without having a heart attack made us feel that the director is using a mature approach in the play.
We will definitely be watching Andaz- e- Sitam on Thursday at 8 pm on Urdu1 to see whether Ayat talks to Wamiq or not but our only concern is that we hope it doesn’t turn into a predictable story where the girl helps the bad boy become nice and both live happily ever after.
